STRIVE  is the basis for the 6 positive behaviour expectations for students and for staff.  Each of the letters of STRIVE represents the expected behaviours at Huia Range School:

S  self awareness   [understanding our actions and thoughts]

T  thinking  [making sense of information, experiences & ideas]

R  respect  [for yourself, others, property and place]

I  integrity  [being honest, consistent and trustworthy]

V  values  [caring about ourselves and each other]

E    excellence [setting and meeting high personal standards]

School Picnic With A Twist
Daniel McDougall & Stephen Charmley

To end term one Huia Range School held a PB4L (Positive Beahaviour For Learning) day.  PB4L is a programme that the school uses.  Positive Behaviour for Learning initiatives help parents, whānau and teachers address problem behaviour, improve children’s well-being, and increase educational achievement by strengthening relationships and creating more positive home and school environments.  PB4L is a long-term, systemic approach involving initiatives.  To celebarte the student’s positive behaviour, this term, the school held a picnic, with a twist, at the Dannevirke Upper Domain.
Equipment form Arena Party Hire in Palmerston North was hired and complimented with equipment from school.  There were 12 events organised by the school leaders, including football, sack races, three legged races as well as inflatable slides, obstacle castles and the inflatable velcro wall.  We were lucky enough to have Max McFarland (a grandparent) drive the Fonterra Milk Train for us.  The train proved to be popular with both junior and senior students!  Tiaki Churchouse and Stephen Charmley organised an Easter egg treasure hunt for everyone to participate in.  A question was hidden and upon finding it and answering it correctly you received an Easter Egg.

The inflatable events were very popular with senior and junior students and time allowed for numerous turns on each event.  Knock your Block off was very popular with the senior students and everyone enjoyed the Balloon Buster, where you had to race your buddy to pump up a balloon to make it pop.

Constable Walshe was in attendance for a time and it was great to have support from the Maori Wardens.  They joined in with the students, even having a tug-o-war with some.

All in all this was a great school picnic, defiantly not like any sort of picnic that we had seen before!
